A steam locomotive is a power-driven towing vehicle used for the first time on the railways, more precisely a steam locomotive is a railway towing vehicle used to transport towed vehicles (railway carriages). Its power plant is a steam engine, the steam needed to operate it is produced in the boiler of the vehicle. The fuel needed to heat the boiler (usually coal, rarely wood or fuel oil) and the boiler feed water are carried by the locomotive in tanks built into the vehicle (steam tank locomotive) or in a separate carriage (steam locomotive) connected to the locomotive. The energy of the steam produced in the boiler is converted into mechanical work by the steam cylinders of the machinery. Based on the feeding of the steam cylinders and the work process that takes place in them, we can only talk about a twin machine fed with fresh steam, or a split-expansion or compound machine that uses the steam pressure in two stages (high and low pressure cylinders). Steam locomotives were manufactured in Hungary until 1959 and in 1984 they were withdrawn from the regular railway traffic. Since then, they have only run at the head of nostalgia trains.
