From the mid-1800s, the number of Jewish families in the city grew rapidly as they played a significant role in the economic and intellectual life of the city. In the 1920s, 11% of the population was Jewish. In 1944, 1,620 Jewish citizens of Eger were deported to the ghetto. Their cemetery was established in the late 1830s. The Jews established the Chevra Kadisha Sacred Society, also known as the Funeral Society, in Eger, whose statute was to care for the poor and sick, to bury the dead, to arrange and conduct a funeral ceremony, and to fulfill the will of the deceased. The cemetery was constantly expanding on plots purchased from the city. In 1925, the old funeral home was demolished, then the current, nationally significant building was built. Cherna Kadisha merged into the faith community in 1950.
