One of the values ​​of the Medves Plateau, Salgótarján, is easily reached from the city-owned Salgóbánya. One of the outstanding assets of the Novohrad-Nógrád Geopark cross-border and the Karancs-Medves Landscape Protection Area is the largest basalt plateau in Central Europe. It was created by a multi-phase volcanic operation approximately 3-4 million years ago. The crater, now a truncated cone, called the Medves-magosa on the border, was the main volcano from which the basalt lava flows that formed the plateau spilled. There are many abandoned quarries on the outskirts, which are now showrooms. The countryside with special landscape features is a popular hiking steel. Its flora and fauna are special. Walking on the plateau you can admire the Karancs Mountains, the castle and cones of Salgó and Somoskő, in clear weather the Matra and the Bükk mountains.
