Already at the end of the 18th century, they were buried in the Israeli cemetery in Avas, Miskolc. The Jewish cemetery in Miskolc-Avas covers an area of nearly 6 hectares and is under constant 24-hour supervision. The place preserves the tombs of several famous rabbinic personalities and is home to the B.A.Z. County Holocaust Memorial Garden. It can be visited every day except Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. There are about 6,000 tombstones in the cemetery. Its first entrance was on the Avas roof, from the town on the Ruzsin side, on today's Hidegh row, which is not in use today. The oldest part of the cemetery is located in the southern corner, here are tombstones from the earliest times. Among the many famous dead in the cemetery are the landowner Munk Samu (1855-1933), chairman of a savings bank, member of a legislative committee who was famous for his charities. A Torah scroll and Ketter (the crown of the Torah) spread out on the sarcophagus-shaped tomb of Chief Rabbi Samuel Austerlitz were carved. The highly respected citizen was the versatile Adolf Neumann of Héthársi (1870-1929), who founded an insurance company and an economic bank, but was also a founding member of the Sajószentpéter Glass Factory. He was the president of the Jewish hospital in Miskolc and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Franz Joseph. Dr. Henrik Singer, who was the first director of the Erzsébet Public Hospital in Borsod County, opened in 1900, also rests here. Exhumed tombs and martyr monuments of discarded Jewish cemeteries were also placed in the northern part of the cemetery garden. (source: boon.hu)
