Here stood the bridge connecting the inner and outer castles. After Sultan Suleiman I's Turkish army blew up the Nádasdy bastion and broke into the outer castle through the gap, the surviving defenders, led by Miklós Zrínyi, retreated to the inner castle. Inside Szigetvár Castle stood the inner castle as the last refuge. On September 7, 1566, the gates of the inner castle in flames were opened, their remaining cannons and rifles were fired, and then Miklós Zrínyi and his remaining soldiers ran across the bridge to the Turks.
