The name of the county and city of Szolnok, the bishop Zounuk (Szolnok), was probably the first bishop of the county, meaning Turkish name: stone, spokesman. Bishop Szolnok was chief of Peter Orseolo, earning lasting merits in the conversion of Christianity. During the Vata pagan rebellion of 1046, he died martyred on St. Gellert's Hill, along with several other members of the Hungarian bishopric, who later got his name from the bishop who died there. The statue of the bishop Szolnok was made by local sculptor Gábor Benog Pogány, which was erected on a pedestal symbolizing a river in the Verseghy Park next to Hotel Tisza. (The site was preceded by a bronze statue of Lenin before the change of regime.)
