The birth of IAIN (now UIN) Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi is inseparable from the development of Islam, as well as Islamic educational institutions in Jambi Province. Encouraged by the desires of the community and scholars at that time, after noting the large number of institutions issuing madrasa students / top-level religious schools in Jambi while there was no higher education that could accommodate the graduates, the Jambi Ulama Congress was held in 1957 which succeeded in giving birth to a decision that in Jambi it is time to establish a tertiary institution.nnOn September 29, 1960 the Sharia Faculty of Islamic al-Hikmah College was established under the auspices of the Jambi Islamic Education Foundation (YPI).nnThe span of the first three years, the Sharia Faculty has demonstrated the unity between the leadership and the community and the regional and central government. With the Decree of the Minister of Religion Number: 50 of 1963 on May 12, 1963, the Faculty of Shari'ah became the Syari'ah Faculty of IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah Branch in Jakarta, and then changed to the IAIN Raden Fatah Palembang branch. Penegerian encouraged officials, scholars and community leaders, especially the Governor of the Level I KDH Jambi Province at that time (M.J. Singadekane) to fight for the establishment of IAIN which has several faculties.nnOn the other hand, since July 11, 1965 the Ma'arif College Foundation had Tarbiyah and Ushuluddin Faculties in Jambi City and while in Sungai Penuh - Kerinci the Syari'ah Muhammadiyah Faculty had also been established in March 1964. Based on the above motivation, so to fulfill the wishes of the officials, the community, the scholars and the Level I Regional Government of Jambi Province, finally the Tarbiyah and Usuluddin Faculties in Ma'arif and the Syari'ah Muhammadiyah Faculty in Kerinci were proposed to be combined in a forum to become faculties in IAIN Jambi environment. The proposal was made because based on the decree of the Republic of Indonesia Republic of Indonesia Number: 11 of 1960 and Regulation of the Minister of Religion Number 5 of 1963, that for the requirements for the establishment of an IAIN it must have at least 3 (three) faculties. On September 30, 1965 with the Decree of the Governor of Jambi Number: 18 in 1965, the Preparatory Committee for the Opening of the Jambi IAIN was formed and approved by the Minister of Religion with Decree Number: 83 of 1965 on November 22, 1965. After going through a long process, journey and struggle by the Committee Preparations for the Opening of the Jambi IAIN, the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia finally approved the establishment of the IAIN in Jambi Province with Decree Number: 84 of 1967 on July 27, 1967.
