The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Andalas University was opened on September 7, 1965 under the Faculty of Sure and Natural Sciences (FIPIA) Andalas University which has been established since 1955 based on the Decree of the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 41007 / Kab. July 14, 1955. In 1983, FIPIA changed its name to FMIPA (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences).nnIn the early period of the Chemistry Department (1968-1970), the Head of the Department was held by St. Nazir. Mudo with the secretary Ir. Asnida Kusrim. The Department of Chemistry, FIPIA University successfully graduated its first undergraduate on August 23, 1972 and to date (2014-2015 academic year) the number of graduates has reached 2382 people who work in various government and private institutions, such as Research Institutions, Universities, Industry, Entrepreneurs and so on. .nnThe Chemistry Postgraduate Study Program has held a master's program (S2) since 1994 while the doctoral level (S3) was opened in 2006, where its management is under the Andalas University Postgraduate Program. Starting in 2013, the Postgraduate Program is managed directly under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Andalas University.nnTo produce quality alumni, the Department of Chemistry always motivates the teaching staff to continue their education, so that until now, of the 50 lecturers, 13 of them have professors' degrees, 17 have doctoral degrees, 18 people have master's degrees and 2 have bachelor's degrees.nnThe Department of Chemistry has a laboratory which functions to support the implementation of education and research. This laboratory consists of 5 educational laboratories that function for practicum implementation, 7 research laboratories for final assignments, 1 measurement laboratory and 1 analytical service laboratory. The management of this laboratory is assisted by 5 analysts.nIn carrying out the education and research process, the Department of Chemistry collaborates with various good parties. Efforts to implement cooperation in the form of partnerships have been carried out with various domestic and foreign institutions. Cooperation with domestic institutions, among others, with PT. Semen Padang, BATAN, BPPT, Pertamina and LIPI. Overseas cooperation has been carried out with Gifu University, Okayama University, Shinsu University, Deakin University and Kanazawa University. This collaboration is carried out in the form of research collaboration and student exchanges. In addition, to publish research results, the Department of Chemistry publishes the ISBN Journal of Chemical Research.
