Primary school (abbreviated as SD; English: Elementary School or Primary School) is the most basic level in formal education in Indonesia. Primary school is taken within 6 years, starting from grade 1 to grade 6. Currently 6th grade students are required to take the National Examination (Ebtanas) which affects student graduation. Primary school graduates can continue their education to junior high school (or equivalent).nnElementary school students are generally 7-12 years old. In Indonesia, every citizen aged 7-15 years is obliged to attend basic education, namely elementary school (or equivalent) 6 years and junior high school (or equivalent) 3 years.nnPrimary schools are organized by the government and the private sector. Since the enactment of regional autonomy in 2001, the management of public elementary schools (SDN) in Indonesia, which were previously under the Ministry of National Education, is now the responsibility of the district / city government. While the Ministry of National Education only acts as a regulator in the field of national education standards. Structurally, public elementary schools are the district / city education office technical implementation units.nnHISTORY:nDuring the Dutch colonial period, high school was called the Europeesche Lagere School (ELS). After that, during the Japanese occupation, it was called the People's School (SR).nnAfter Indonesia's independence, SR changed to Elementary School (SD) on March 13, 1946.nnSD curriculum:nReligionnCitizenshipnPhysical and HealthnInformation and Communication TechnologynIndonesiannEnglishnLocal languagenForeign languagenMathematicsnNatural SciencesnHistorynSocial SciencesnCultural Arts and skillsn2013 curriculum:nReligious educationnPancasila and civic educationnIndonesiannMathematicsnNatural Sciences (only grades 4 to 6)nSocial Sciences (only grades 4 to 6)nCultural Arts and skillsnphysical education and Health SciencesnnManagement :nBasic education in Indonesia is basically divided into two, namely those managed by the government, usually referred to as Public Elementary Schools and Medium Public Madrasas, the second is managed by the community, usually called Private Primary Schools and Private Madrasah Ibtidaiyah. SD is under the scope of the Ministry of Education and Culture while MI is under the scope of the Ministry of Religion. besides that there are also elementary schools under the scope of the Ministry of Education and Culture characterized by religion as Islamic Primary Schools or Christian Primary Schools, etc.nnProblems:nDue to Indonesia's geographical location, the biggest problem is teacher equalization in remote areas, worse even though the government states that many teachers have been appointed civil servants but there are still many teachers who have not been appointed civil servants, plus there are also honorary teachers who get a salary only + Rp. 100,000, - a month.nnThe APBN has allocated 20% for education, but basic education is still funded by the APBD (BOS funds). The amount of education funds in the APBD is very limited; except for DKI Jakarta, all APBDs still rely on balancing funds from the Central Government. As a result, basic education facilities are only elementary schools in DKI Jakarta which can be said to be adequate, although they are still far from international standards.
