Elementary school (abbreviated elementary; English: Elementary School or Primary School) is the most basic level of formal education in Indonesia. Elementary school is taken within 6 years, starting from grade 1 to grade 6. Currently grade 6 students are required to take the National Examination (Ebtanas) which affects the graduation of students. Elementary school graduates can continue their education to junior high school level.nnElementary school students are generally 6-12 years old. In Indonesia, every citizen aged 6-15 years is required to attend primary education, i.e. primary school (or equivalent) 6 years and junior high school (or equivalent) 3 years.nnElementary schools are run by the government and the private sector. Since the enactment of regional autonomy in 2001, the management of public primary schools (SDN) in Indonesia, which was previously under the Ministry of National Education, is now the responsibility of district / city governments. Whereas the Ministry of National Education only acts as a regulator in the field of national education standards. Structurally, a public elementary school is a technical implementing unit of the district / city education office.
