Owned by local mafia. No option to go on your own unless you want to get into trouble with them. 600k for a guide for 2 people for 'safety'. Moreover there are hundreds of people on the trek everyday. Finally didn't go because I didn't want to get ripped off to climb a straightforward mountain in a crowd. There are many other places around to see the sunrise for free or for 5k and no one is there. Just look on maps.me for Sunrise Points.

I did the sunrise hike and it is definitely worth it. The view and the sunrise is stunning. But there are a lot tourists, so get sure you are in fast groupe to get a good spot. Mt. Batur is around 1730m high and it is in the morning so take a jacket with you. During the hike you will get sweaty, but on the top waiting for the sunrise it can get cold. As soon as it gets bright also some monkey will appear and try to get some food. The monkeys are wild don't feed them, keep your distance and keep your stuff close to you.

Amazing ! Tough to wake up so early (pickup at 2am in ubud) but this is a must do in Bali! The trek is not really difficult, do not forget a good jacket it is really cold at the top and you wait 1h for the sunrise. You can rent one on arrival at the parking before starting the hike for 50k if you didn’t bring one on your luggages. 4 stars only as I am a trekking/ hikes lover but there is unfortunately hundreds of people climbing to the top and they are really slow. At the top there is usually between 400-600people during the high seasons but this is not really disturbing as we are not too close from each other. Of course if you prefer hike in a wild place and calm forget this one, but the view and the sunrise are amazing, pay attention to the weather before booking, we were lucky and had a clear sky but that’s not always the case !
