Elementary school (abbreviated elementary; English: Elementary School or Primary School) is the most basic level of formal education in Indonesia. Elementary school is taken within 6 years, starting from grade 1 to grade 6. Currently grade 6 students are required to take the National Examination (Ebtanas) which affects the graduation of students. Elementary school graduates can continue their education to junior high school level. Elementary school students are generally 7-12 years old. In Indonesia, every citizen aged 7-15 years is required to attend primary education, i.e. primary school (or equivalent) 6 years and junior high school (or equivalent) 3 years.
