Borneo Homestay (A home for Travellers)

Cheap and well located, right in the centre of town and steps away from the river. The morning markets tour is unforgettable. Diamond mining a highlight too. Joe is friendly and obliging but not an especially responsible or organised tour guide. The rainforest trek is hardcore and many parts are potentially very dangerous - slippery steep downhill slopes, crossing very wild rapids in deep water. Joe carries no first aid kit or even bottled water on the 6 hour hike and I fell a couple of times and found each time that he was busy taking photos for his Instagram profile. Nevertheless, the homestay up north is lovely, near a commercially built natural hot spring. Nice neighborhood. Joe also loves his family, which isn't always welcome such as when his young and very talkative daughter is brought along on what could have been a tranquil river rafting trip or when side trips on your time are made to children's play parks for her amusement. Overall a memorable trip and worthwhile overall and Joe does his best, but this isn't a very professional operation.
