GLOBAL AGREEMENTnnFrom Indonesia's beaches to the Arctic, plastic is choking our planet. Most plastics become waste after a single use. It has polluted land, rivers and oceans. It even gets into our food chain. Many of us make little effort to reduce plastic pollution, but this is when governments and businesses take responsibility too. Call on governments to introduce a legally binding global agreement to stop plastic from polluting our oceans.nnHow do you calculate this?nnThere are numerous reports in the media about the microplastics we consume - through our food (shellfish, honey and salt), our drinks (tap water, bottled water and beer), and even air. We worked with the University of Newcastle, Australia, to calculate the average weight estimate for the amount of microplastic that the study said we were consuming. Full analysis is available here.nnIs this detrimental to my health?nnActually, we don't know. We know that plastic does irreparable damage to wildlife, but scientists are only just starting to see what it can do to human health. Can we say, categorically, that this impacts our health? Not. Does that mean we can rest easy? Absolutely not. After all, you wouldn't choose to eat an actual credit card, would you?nnHow do we really solve this problem?nnWhile saying 'no' to a straw and carrying a reusable bag is a great first step, one that you absolutely have to do, it is the government and business that need to get it done. At WWF, we want governments around the world to sign global, legally binding agreements to streamline the way we use and dispose of plastics. Businesses can also play an important role here - for example, by changing their production models and product designs to allow plastic reuse rather than immediate disposal.nnFAQ
