UMSB is a change in form from a merger (merger) of several Muhammadiyah High Schools that began to be established in West Sumatra in 1955. The merger of Muhammadiyah High Schools in West Sumatra, including the Muhammadiyah Padang Panjang Teacher Training and Education College (STKIP), the College of Sciences Muhammadiyah Bukittinggi Law (STIH), Muhammadiyah Bukittinggi College of Engineering (STIT), Muhammadiyah Payakumbuh College of Agricultural Sciences (STIP), and Muhammadiyah Padang Academy of Management (AMA).nnThe forerunner of the West Sumatra Muhammadiyah University, was officially established on November 18, 1955, marked by the inauguration of the Faculty of Philosophy and Law in Padang Panjang by the General Chairperson of PP Muhammadiyah A.R. Sutan Mansur. The first Rector is Dr. H. Ali Akbar and as the Dean are Drs. Danuhusodo, followed by Mr. Ezidin. This faculty also marked the establishment of the first Muhammadiyah University in Indonesia.nnOn September 1, 1964, the Kulliyatul Muballighin Academy was established in Padang Panjang, as the Dean, Drs. Djama'an Shaleh. In 1965, his status was upgraded and changed its name to the Faculty of Religious Sciences, Department of Da'wah as Dean of Buya H. Haroun El-Ma'any. This faculty had a branch in Medan which was inaugurated on February 11, 1973. In 1964 the Academy of Commerce was established in Bukittinggi. Then on December 20, 1965, its status was upgraded to the Muhammadiyah School of Economics. Furthermore, on November 18, 1965 the Faculty of Adab was established in Padang which consisted of two departments, namely the Department of Arabic and English with the Dean being Drs. Nur Anas Djamil. This faculty only existed for one year, namely until December 10, 1966 and then a vacuum occurred. Based on these conditions, at the Tarjih Council Regional Conference on April 27, 1967 the Adab Faculty changed its name to the Syari'ah Faculty with the students coming from the Arabic Language Department students of the Adab Faculty. The first dean to take office was H. Darwas Idris, who at that time served as Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Leadership Council for the West Sumatra Region.nnAlong with that, in 1966, on August 20, 1966, the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge was established in Bukittinggi. Then on March 1, 1967 the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge was also established in Solok. However, due to various factors including lack of support, the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge in Solok was merged with the Faculty of Law and Community Knowledge in Bukittinggi with its first Dean, Firdaus SH.nnIn 1967 it was also precisely on March 16, 1967 that the Technical Academy was also established in Sawahlunto with its Dean, Ir. Atmoso Suhud. However, on 30 May 1968 the faculty was forced to close due to lack of enthusiasts and other difficulties. Two years after that, on December 20, 1969, the Tarbiyah Faculty was established in Padang Panjang with its first Dean, H. Haroun El-Ma'any. In 1976 STIE Muhammadiyah changed to the Academy of Management and Accounting (AMA). In 1983, to be precise, on April 5, 1983, the Teacher Training and Education Faculty was established in Padang Panjang, which was formerly known as the Teacher Training and Education College, led by the Dean, Drs. M. Kadir. A year after that, namely on June 23, 1984, the Faculty of Engineering was established, located in Bukittinggi with its first dean, Ir. Lukman HB. The establishment of this faculty is inseparable from the existence and links of the Engineering Faculty that previously existed in Sawahlunto.
