Short ProfilennGBKP is a church that stands in the land of Karo and serves the Karo people. The beginning of the missionary effort to the Karo area did not arise because of spiritual duties. The effort was started because of J.T's request. Creamers, a plantation leader in East Sumatra. He argues, the best way so that indigenous people in the area do not oppose and disrupt the plantation business is to spread the gospel and Christianize them. GBKP begins with the presence of Rev. H.C. Kruyt, a NZG missionary to the Karo land April 18, 1890. This date was later determined as GBKP's Anniversary (HUT). To help Ps. H.C. Kruyt and other missionaries, NZG sent several Gospel Teachers from Minahasa. The gospel message begins in a village called Buluhawar. While the name GBKP was set at the Synod I Session, July 21, 1941 in Sibolangit, at the same time the dedication of two Karo people became the first Karo priest, Rev. Palem Sitepu and Pdt. Thomas Sibero. Previously they both received formal education at Sipoholon Seminary (HKBP). The development of the gospel in karo was very slow. Its rapid development only occurred after the G30S-PKI incident which encouraged many people to take refuge in the GBKP. Since 1970, the GBKP has emphasized a program of fostering members of the congregation, including its involvement in empowering church members and communities. GBKP partnered with Nederlanse Hervormde Kerk in the Netherlands, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and United Evangelism Mission (UEM) from Germany.
