The cemetery are not noticeable, so you will not realize that there is a grave there. I recognize this cemetery when I was walking around the Tsunami museum but can not find the way towards the cemetery. When walking out from the museum to the left side, I saw a big mural about history then I start to think maybe there is something I can find inside. Then I look at the entrance and see there is white statue looks like a memorial statue. It is free entrence.

This is a Dutch graveyard.nOn the walls are written names of those buried here since the 19th century.nMost are related to Aceh war and occupation.nAccording to the caretaker significant number of families of the deceased come here yearly.nIf you see only a cross, this means that the original tomb had been washed away by the 2004 tsunami.nVery peaceful place indeed next to Tsunami Museum and Gunongan Historical Park.

This is the last place for thousands of Dutch soldiers who died in an attempt to occupy Aceh. People call this funeral complex 'Kerkhof Peutjoet'. The name of this funeral complex is indeed quite unique because it is a blend of Acehnese and Dutch languages. Kerkhof in Dutch means grave. Consists of two syllables, 'kerk' which means church and 'hoff' which means page. Besides the Dutch army there are also graves of Chinese and Marsose soldiers. There is also the tomb of the son of Sultan Iskandar Muda who was sentenced to stoning, the existence of this tomb long before the Dutch soldiers and others were buried. According to the Peutjoet Cemetery book, the first Dutch soldier to be buried was Lieutenant Weijrman.

Traces of the history of the Acehnese struggle against the Dutch. Where buried hundreds of Dutch citizens who died including Dutch soldiers who died in the Aceh war. One of the most famous is the KNIL commander namely general Johan Harmen Rudolf Köhler who was killed at the Baiturrahman mosque in Banda Aceh. After being buried in Tanah Abang (currently an inscription museum), his body was moved to Kerkhoff Poetjoet. The location is behind the Aceh tsunami museum. Pretty shady, there are still many trees, beautiful.
