The enactment of Law Number 22 Year 1999 which has been revised to Law Number 32 Year 2004 concerning Regional Governments, makes district / city governments have the authority to manage their respective organizations in government and education. The aim of decentralized education is to improve quality, relevant and equitable education services to the community. On the other hand, the expansion of the province of North Maluku and the geographical conditions consisting of many islands have caused relatively limited community access, and are exacerbated by horizontal conflicts which have resulted in many obstacles to access to higher education. From this condition the North Maluku Muhammadiyah University (UMMU) was born which was established by the Muhammadiyah Maluku Regional Leaders. North University of Muhammadiayah North Maluku is part of the Muhammadiyah College (PTM) which is engaged in education and propaganda that is professionally managed. So that in the mechanism of preparing the vision, mission and objectives are based on the principles of need, sustainability and benefits.nnThe founding team includes; Drs. H. Yunus Namsa (Chair of PWM North Maluku), Drs. Muin Syafii (Secretary of PWM), Drs. Djafar Umar (Team Leader), Kasman Hi. Ahmad, S.Ag, (Team Secretary), Herman Oesman S. Sos. (member), Agus SB. S.Sos (Member), Drs Rusman Soleman, M.Si (Member), Mohdar Arif, SH (Member) and Drs Rusli Sibua (Member). The establishment team was the result of the decision of the North Maluku PWM plenary meeting on 15 February 2001. The process of establishing the UMMU began with the preparation of the establishment proposal, RIP, UMMU Statute, and curriculum which was carried out for approximately seven months. The groundbreaking was carried out on April 21, 2001. On June 23, 2001 the opening of the lecture was officially opened by North Maluku Acting Governor A. Muhyi Effendy.nnOn 5 June 2001, the Chairperson of BPH-UMMU and the Chancellor of UMMU accepted the Decree of the Indonesian Minister of Education No. 073 / D / O / 2001, concerning the establishment and operational permits for 2 study programs namely the State Administration at the ISIP faculty and Mathematics at the F-MIPA. The lecture process began on 10 September 2001 which was marked by a general stadium by M. Dawam Rahardjo who was housed in the Toboko campus (Muhammadiyah High School).nnIn 2008, UMMU developed and had 7 (seven) faculties consisting of 14 study programs and the Postgraduate Administration Study Program. In 2011 UMMU had 8 (eight) faculties comprising 16 study programs. In 2005/2006 all study programs were accredited and in 2010/2011 all study programs were re-accredited. The results of the Re-accreditation by BAN-PT, there are 8 (eight) study programs that have a B value, and 8 (eight) study programs that have a C value.nnIn 2012 UMMU obtained the best rating by being in the top ten within the Muhammadiyah College (PTM) by PP Muhammadiyah's Higher Education. Then in 2014 UMMU was awarded the title of the healthiest private university in the Kopertis assessment of the XII and DIKTI regions. This was continued with the awarding of the 2014 Bidik Misi Scholarship of 100 students.nnUMMU in the 2013-2017 Road Map developed excellent programs while still referring to the 7 (seven) standards contained in the AIPT Form and continued to strengthen the academic field, quality assurance, research and community service, infrastructure, students and graduates, finance, cooperation and partnerships and human resources. UMMU improvement will be carried out continuously towards independent and professional universities so that they can compete at the local, regional, national and international levels.
