The historical building is located to the east of the mangkunegaran palace square.

The Kavallerie-Artillerie building was built in 1874, during the reign of Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Arya Mangkunegara IV. This building is a historical building that was used as a shelter for the Mangkunegaran Legion, meanwhile, pamedan was used as a training ground for the Mangkunegaran Duchy, or as a center for Mangkunegaran Legion activities.nnThe Mangkunegaran Legion was the most modern Asian military unit of its time, founded on the orders of the French ruler Napoleon Bonaparte. France involved in war with Prussia, Russia and Britain, had the strongest army in the world at that time. The Mangkunegaran Legion was formed by adopting the 'Grande Armee' of Napoleon Bonaparte.nnMangkunegara II as the ruler of Mangkunegaran Temple had a vision for the future and was able to adopt the modern ideas of his day namely European-style military organizations as well as the strongest in the world. Mangkunegara II took the initiative to form this force when the 36th Governor General of the Dutch East Indies Herman Willem Daendels came to Java.nnThe Mangkunegaran Legion was formed with two kinds of interests, namely a reserve of troops which was useful for the Dutch East Indies Army, and also as a political tool used to frighten any attempt to abolish divisive politics.nnThe legion, which originally had a strength of 1,150 personnel, was formed in 1808 as a place to collect and rebuild military strength from its predecessor, Mangkunegara I or Pangeran Sambernyawa.
