ISTANA MALIGE

Istana Malige, a large wooden 'palace' which was built by a former ruler of the Sultanate of Wolio, is perhaps the single most impressive timber building in the city of Baubau. It features a multi-layered roof, which is a common feature of traditional Buton houses, as well as brightly painted blue and white railings and awning supports. There is a pineapple on top which is a symbol of the sultanate. The site also contains a contemporaneous mosque and pavilion.
