The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) was founded on July 14, 1955, and was inaugurated by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia on September 7, 1955 in Bukittinggi under the name of the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences (FIPIA) together with the Faculty of Medicine. At that time, FIPIA only had one department, namely Geology.nnBetween 1958-1962, FIPIA Andalan University was forced to close due to regional upheaval. In 1962 FIPIA was reopened with one Department, namely Biology, and only in 1964 and 1965, the Department of Pharmacy and Chemistry was opened respectively. FIPIA changed its name to FMIPA (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) in 1983. Two new departments, namely the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Physics, were opened in 1996. In 2008, the Department of Pharmacy was developed into the Faculty of Pharmacy. However, in the same year, FMIPA succeeded in adding a new study program, namely Computer Systems under the Mathematics Department. In 2012, the Computer Systems study program separated from FMIPA and joined the FTI (Faculty of Information Technology). Until now, FMIPA has conducted Postgraduate study programs (S2), Doctoral programs (S3), non-regular programs, and the Basic Science S1 program for boarding teachers to produce professional teacher candidates.nnFMIPA Andalas University has continued to improve the quality of teaching staff since the 1980s, by sending teaching staff to S2 and S3 programs both at home and abroad, as a result currently FMIPA Andalas University has 52 lecturers with S3 education levels, 88 Masters , S1 as many as 21 people and 19 of them have the title Professor (Professor).nFMIPA currently has 41 laboratories that function to support the implementation of education and research. In addition, there is the Andalas University Herbarium (YOU) which is the second largest Herbarium after the Herbarium Bogoriense. The new Andalas University Botanical Garden was formed and managed by FMIPA staff. This Botanical Garden has three units, namely, Biological Education and Research Forest (HPPB), Arboretum and Pharmaceutical Medicinal Plant Garden (KTOF).nBesides teaching and learning activities, FMIPA also carries out scientific activities in the form of seminars, workshops at national and international standards. FMIPA also collaborates with various parties, both government and private industry, domestic and foreign. To publish the results of research conducted by both FMIPA lecturers and other researchers, FMIPA has three journals, namely, the Andalas Chemistry Journal published by the Department of Chemistry, the Biospectrum Journal published by the Biology Department and the Physics Journal published by the Physics Department. Books and journals supporting lectures can be found at the central library of Andalas University, the FMIPA private library in each department and on the FMIPA e-journal website, Andalas University.nnAt that time, the Department of Chemistry had an Accreditation Score of B (Assessment Year 2010), the Department of Mathematics had an Accreditation Value of B (2012 Assessment Year), the Department of Physics had an Accreditation Score of B (2012 Assessment Year) and the Department of Biology had an A Accreditation Score (2012 Assessment Year). This assessment was carried out again in 2015 for the Chemistry Department, 2016 for the Mathematics Department, 2017 for the Physics Department and 2017 for the Biology Department.nnHowever, currently all departments at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences have achieved A accreditation, both for the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology.
