Kotagede Yogyakarta is a City of HistorynnThis city is a historic area which is The Old Capital City which keeps history about the birth of Islamic Mataram. Starting from the establishment of an empire in the middle of the forest in 1575 initiated by Ki Ageng Archery which was the origin of the founding of the kingdom of Mataram. The whole land of Java is the territory of the Hindu Mataram kingdom. The kingdom has an extraordinary civilization and prosperity of the people who are sufficient so that they can build magnificent temples with charming architecture. Like the Borobudur Temple, other funds,nnAround the 10th century the kingdom moved its government to East Java so that the people flocked to leave Mataram until it was finally exhausted and the area returned deserted and became forest again.nnAbout 6 centuries later, the island of Java was the power of the Pajang Sultanate which was centered in Central Java. Sultan Hadiwijaya who was in power at that time gave a gift to Ki Gede Archery for his achievements in defeating the enemies of the kingdom. The prize is in the form of a forest known as Alas Mentaok. Ki Gede Penggahan along with his family and followers finally moved to this place which was actually a forest of the former Hindu Mataram kingdom in the past.nnKi Gede Pemahan built a small village in the forest and gradually the village continued to grow until Ki Gede Pemahan died. The leadership was then continued by his son, Senopati Ingalaga. The village under the leadership of Senopati Ingalaga grew and continued to develop rapidly so that it turned into a city that was very crowded and prosperous and finally called Kotagede or Kota Besar.nnIn his work as a leader, Senopati Ingalaga also built an inner fort (cepuri) which covers the palace and also built an outer fortress (baluwarti) which surrounds an area of around 200 Ha. Subsequently Senopati Ingalaga became the first king of Islamic Mataram which held the Senopati Worship with its central government in Kotagede.nnFurthermore, under the leadership of Panembahan Senopati, the kingdom of Mataram which he led succeeded in expanding his territory to Pati, Madiun, Kediri and Pasuruan. Almost all of Java became his territory except Batavia and Banten.nnThis Islamic Mataram Kingdom reached its peak during the reign of the 3rd king, Sultan Agung, who was the grandson of Panembahan Senopati. Sultan Agung in his government in 1613 moved the center of the kingdom to the Karta Pleret Bantul region.nnIf tourists go through the Kotagede region with narrow streets and alleys, it will remind us of the culture of Mataram in the 16th century AD. The people who live in Kotagede now make a living mostly as traders and silver and batik artisans. Meanwhile the building structure in Kotagede is slightly different from the typical Javanese house building. The shape of a large house surrounded by thick and high walls is a characteristic of heritage buildings as a form of defense during the Islamic Mataram kingdom in the past.nnAlong with the development of time, Kotagede is now becoming an increasingly crowded city even though it is no longer the capital of the Mataram kingdom. When exploring Kotagede, you will find many old buildings built around 1930 with various shapes and different and unique architects. Along the way you will find a row of shops that only sell silver handicrafts that were previously a down and down craft that already existed in the days of Mataram.nnThese places include: the Great Mosque of Kotagede, the Tomb of the Mataram Kings, the Kotagede Market and a number of historical relics of Mataram namely the Watu Gilang Site.
