The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (abbreviated BMKG), formerly known as the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (abbreviated BMG) is a Non-Departmental Indonesian Government Institution that has the task of carrying out governmental tasks in the fields of meteorology, climatology, and geophysics.nnQuick Facts: The legal basis, Field assignment ...nHistorynThe history of meteorological and geophysical observations in Indonesia began in 1841, beginning with observations made individually by Dr. Onnen, Chief Hospital in Bogor. Year after year developing its activities in accordance with the growing need for weather data and geophysical observations.nnIn 1866, the individual observation activity by the Netherlands Indies Government was formalized as a government agency by the name of Magnetisch en Meteorologisch Observatory (Magnetic Observatory, and Meteorology), led by Dr. Bergsma.nnDuring the Japanese occupation between 1942 and 1945, the name of the meteorological and geophysical agency was changed to the Meteorological Institute (気 象 構造 区 ish Kishoukouzoukusho).nnAfter the proclamation of Indonesian independence in 1945, the agency was split into two namely:nnThe Meteorology Bureau, located within the Headquarters of the Supreme People's Security Army, Yogyakarta, specifically serves the interests of the Air Force.nThe Meteorology and Geophysics Office in Jakarta is under the Ministry of Public Works, and Energy.nOn July 21, 1947, the Bureau of Meteorology and Geophysics was taken over by the Dutch Government and its name was changed to Meteorologisch en Geofisiche Dienst. Meanwhile, there is also the Meteorology and Geophysics Office which is maintained by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia which is located at Jalan Gondangdia, Jakarta.nnIn 1949, after the surrender of the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia from the Netherlands, the Meteorologisch en Geofisiche Dienst was changed to the Bureau of Meteorology and Geophysics under the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works.nnSubsequently in 1950, Indonesia officially entered as a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Head of the Meteorology and Geophysics Office became Indonesia's Permanent Representative at WMO.nnIn 1955, the Meteorology and Geophysics Office was renamed the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency under the Ministry of Transportation, and in 1960 the name was returned to the Meteorology and Geophysics Office under the Department of Civil Aviation.
