Of the entire island cluster, there are four major islands, namely Tanah Bala Island (39.67 km²), Tanah Masa Island (32.16 km²), Tello Island (18 km²), and Pini Island (24.36 km²). Not all islands are inhabited. The people of South Nias are spread across 21 islands in eight sub-districts.nnOn March 28, 2005, an earthquake struck the Nias islands with a magnitude of 8.7 on the Richter scale, paralyzing government and development activities in the area. From data from the South Nias district head, it was recorded that 5,845 houses were destroyed, as well as 274 places of worship, 20 offices and 217 school buildings in South Nias district. A total of 138 people died.
