The Kauman Gedhe Mosque in Yogyakarta, which was built by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I on May 29, 1773, is a symbol of the harmonization of the distinctive cultural side of the Kingdom of Yogyakarta which is laden with historical travel with the religiosity of its people.nnAside from being a means of worship for the royal family and its people, the mosque which is also known as the Greater Yogyakarta Special Mosque was built as a complement to the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Islamic Kingdom.nnOverall, the arrangement and details of the Kauman Gedhe Mosque building characterize Javanese Islamic culture. This characteristic can be seen from the roof of the mosque which uses a three-style traditional Javanese style arrangement called Tajug LambingTeplok. This pattern means three stages of achieving the perfection of human life, namely nature, Shari'a, and ma'rifat.nnAt the top end of the roof layer there is a mustaka in the form of a kluwih leaf - a type of breadfruit - meaning a privilege for individuals who have reached the perfection of life, and gadha in the form of an alif letter as a symbol of only one God. The combination of all these symbols embodies the meaning that people who have undergone the nature, syariah, and ma'rifat, their lives will always be close to God Almighty.

A very well preserved historic mosque. The atmosphere is comfortable, always crowded when praying in congregation and always filled with regular studies
