What the hell is that? Is That a Place of Permanent Torture? The Bible's answer Some Bibles translate the Hebrew words "Sheol" and the Greek "Hades" as "hell". The true meaning of these two words is the grave of man, or the world of the dead. (Psalm 16:10; Acts 2:27) Many view hell as a burning fire, as illustrated in this article. However, the Bible does not support that teaching. People in hell cannot feel pain because they are unconscious. The dead are completely unaware of anything. There is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol .'— Ecclesiastes 9: 5, 10. Good people too go to hell. Faithful servants of God, such as Jacob and Job, went there. — Genesis 37:35; Job 14:13. The punishment for sin is death, not torture in hell. “He who has died has been acquitted from his sin.” - Romans 6: 7. If there is a place of eternal torment, it means that God is not fair. (Deuteronomy 32: 4) When the first man, Adam, sinned, God said, "You are dust, and to dust you shall return." So, Adam will no longer exist, or be destroyed. (Genesis 3:19) If Adam was put in hell, that would mean that God was unfaithful. Eternal torment never even appeared in the mind of God. The idea that God punishes people in hell is not in harmony with the Bible's teaching that "God is love." Jeremiah 7:31.
