Ambon War Cemetery

The Ambon War Cemetery is a nice and quiet place to visit. Very tidy and well maintained. Took some lovely photo but I wouldn't recommend to specially come to here. If you are passing through, do take some time to see.

Catching one of the many buses from the local market that runs along the port will take you to the front gate of the Ambon Commonwealth War Cemetery for the princely sum of 30 cents. The black iron gates at the front appear to be permanently locked, however, to the left of those a few meters away is a smaller gate which is open. The gardens come into view when walking up the stone driveway as do the huge trees which dot the landscape. Exploring further it is quite obvious that the lawns and gardens are impecably cared for by the groundsman. The end of each row of plaques carries the row and plot numbers and the map is on the website. The cemetery is terraced and designed well and one can imagine the view of the sea that would have been more evident 70 odd years ago before being built out. The cenotaph which is opposite the front gates holds bronze plaques commemorating those who died. There is a stone centrepiece with a bronze plaque which has a handle. Turn the handle and inside you will find the records of those who are buried in the cemetery and two visitor books. I would recommend the Commonwealth War Cemetery as a must see when in Ambon.
