Teuku Nyak Arif was a national hero who stood up to defend the rights of Aceh people before the Dutch colonial power. He was a member of Volksraad in 1930s. With some power on his hand, he urged people in Aceh to get formal education. He helped enrolling numerous Aceh youth into Dutch schools and at the same time commanded the parents to equip their children with Islamic teaching. He died a few month after Indonesian independence.
