Solid place to camp. The “walk in” from the grassy parking lot is short (less than 50 yards to any campsite). There is a hidden foot trail for the campsites that are little further back that will shorten your walk. Camp staff was friendly, they have a great store at the front. The bathrooms/showers were clean and never really busy. Seems like a great place if you’d like to visit Charleston and tour on foot and by bicycle.

Campground is clean. Tent pads are nice. Only complaint is the lack of restroom facilities near the tent camping. There are two big nice shower houses by the RV parking and one small shower house on the very far end of the tent camping, by the family camping. So expect to use the woods, especially in the middle of the night. Also, only one footpath between car parking and actual tent camping area. we didn’t realize this and had chosen the spot in the farthest corner away from that foot path bridge so it took awhile to load and unload the vehicle. But otherwise the park was nice as the Christmas lights were awesome.

We just bought our first camper and our plans to camp in Gulf State Park were thwarted by a pair of hurricanes so we had to make a last minute change in our plans. We were a little worried because we didn't have a lot of time to research this campground before we reserved our spot, but those worries were put to rest as soon as we arrived! This place is awesome! Our site backs up to a fishing pond and there are several porch swings around the pond to sit in. The bath house is clean and well maintained and they even have laundry facilities. Each site has it's own picnic table and most have full hook ups. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy here. There are walking and biking trails and they have bike rentals. There is an outdoor zone with rock climbing, disc golf and ziplining. There is a small water park as well, but it is closed due to corona virus. The staff are all super friendly. And Folly Beach is only a 15 minute ride. We are having a great time here!!

5 star and nothing less. At some point, you need to stay here. The spots, no matter WHAT spot, are spacious, comfy, amazing. Plenty to do for anyone, such a relaxing atmosphere. Located right outside Charleston city, it makes for a perfect home base. I didn't even realize I picked right by the bath houses, which were AWESOME btw, individual stalls with benches.. I can't say enough about this place. Love it.

We’ve really been enjoying this park. Some awesome things that have stuck out so far are that the showers (unlike many other campgrounds) are actually very hot, and stay hot, very clean, tiled, feels like you’re showering at home! Laundry is located outdoors which I love as well. There’s an activity center that has a full size convection oven, can opener, microwave- ummm that’s amazing! I’ve just been noticing so many things that James island campground offers that no other campground ever would. You surely get what you pay for.
