Sheikh Abdussamad or later known as Datuk Bakumpai was the son of a scholar named Sheikh Jamaluddin - a Mufti of the Banjar Kingdom - and grandson of the great cleric of Banjar, Sheikh Muhammad Arsyad Al Banjari.nBorn in a devout family on 24 Dzulqa'idah 1237H / 12 August 1822 in Marabahan (Batola-South Kalimantan), Sheikh Abdussamad easily obtained religious knowledge. More than the Father who was a great scholar in the Banjar Land of his time.nnAfter reaching that level, Sheikh Abdussamad then proceeded to seek knowledge at the source of knowledge in the Banjar Land, namely, in the Village of Pagar, Martapura. Within the Fence is a village built by Sheikh Muhammad Arsyad Al Banjari.nnIn that village he held a halaqoh (assembly) for the family and community to study science. The alumni of the halaqoh were then spread all over Kalimantan to preach.
