At first we wanted to visit the Yogyakarta Palace. However, the palace has been closed because it was Friday (August 30, 2019) where the palace closed earlier than other days. We were directed by a guide who was still in the Keraton area to visit a batik painting gallery located not far from the Palace.nnPreviously we were told that visitors will be given an explanation of batik painting, the process of making batik, seeing batik paintings, and allowed to take pictures free of charge or pay for admission.nnWe are also interested to see the gallery. By walking following the guide about 50 meters from the car park area, we arrived at the gallery and were greeted by a man who we later found out was Mr. Hery S himself whose name was listed on the gallery's signboard.nnHe was very friendly and happily explained the process of making batik. Starting from making sketches, giving night / candles with various patterns / motifs, each of which has its own meaning and level of difficulty, the process of coloring and boiling, drying, re-giving the night / candle, coloring and re-boiling, until finally becoming a written batik work really handmade, original, and is second to none (there is no exact match between written batik with each other). What an extraordinary work.nnAfter hearing an explanation of the process of making handmade batik, he invited us to enter the gallery which contained batik paintings. We were given the opportunity to look around the paintings and get answers to the questions we asked.nnHe also explained that some of his batik paintings were made from natural dyes that he made himself. The process takes tens of hours. For example, the color of indigo is made of a small purple flower boiled for 20 hours. He then showed us paintings that used chemical dyes and natural dyes so that we ordinary people know the difference. Natural dyes are finer / softer while chemical dyes are sharper in color.nnHe also showed how to display batik paintings so that they do not moldy, which is displayed not against the wall, given frames without glass, and if possible, given the background of LED lights so that the beauty of the painting looks maximal in our eyes. He also explained that the batik painting can be washed and ironed and should not be cloth bleach.nnThe price of batik paintings depends on the size and other categorizations. Visitors do not need to worry because in the gallery there is already a sheet price list of paintings. Nominal starting from Rp. 250,000 up to Rp. 5.800.000, - If you are not a lover of batik painting, you may begin to fall in love with him when you know how complicated the process of making this batik painting. Have a nice visit.
