HKBP became the first PGI member on May 25, 1950. It was founded on October 7, 1861 as a result of the Bremen-German Zending Rheinische Mission Geschelschaft (RMG) effort, marked by the baptism of the first Batak people to become Christians. On July 11, 1940 HKBP became an independent church and Ps. K. Sirait was chosen as the first Voorzitter (Ephorus) among the Batak people. In its 150 years, HKBP has spread throughout Indonesia and abroad. In its service to the people and the community, HKBP developed Tritugas church calls, namely: Koinonia, Diakonia and Marturia. At present, HKBP has around 4.5 million members of the congregation throughout Indonesia. HKBP also has several churches abroad, such as in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle and in the state of Colorado. Since it was first established, HKBP is headquartered in Pearaja (North Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra) which is about 1 km from the center of Tarutung, the district capital. Pearaja is a village located along the road to the city of Sibolga (the capital of Central Tapanuli Regency). The HKBP office complex, the administrative center of the HKBP organization, is in an area of ​​approximately 20 hectares.
