Srowolan Market is one of the many struggle markets in Yogyakarta. At first glance it is no different from most other traditional markets in the country. However, the market which was founded in 1921 and occupied the land owned by the Yogyakarta Palace turned out to keep its own story in the struggle of the Indonesian people to gain independence.nnIts location is quite remote far from the downtown crowd, and arguably not strategic as the market in general. This is not because the previous person was wrong (or incompetent) in choosing a market location. When many villages or hamlets in the cities of Yogyakarta and Sleman were abandoned by residents due to Dutch military aggression, the market located on the Merapi Slope became a gathering place for fighters and refugees.
