Poonthanam illam is situated in malappuram District. This was the place where bhakthakavi Sri poonthanam,writer of jnanapana lived.It is believed that in this place Sree guruvayoorappan gaved his darshan to poonthanam namboothiri and he attained moksha. Now this building and it's surroundings are maintained by guruvayoor devaswom board.

Poonthanam Namboothiri is believed to have been born in 1547 at Poonthanam's house in Malappuram. His real name is not clear as he was known by no other name,nHe is a famous devotional poet of Kerala and the pride of Malappuram district,nLegend has it that after the untimely death of his son, Krishna entered the path of devotion with the thought that his son was enough.
