The English Cemetery at Katargam, Surat is one of the earliest cemeteries founded by the traders of the East India Company in India. Surat was the leading port of the west coast of India in the sixteenth century. The English Cemetery contains 17 substantial monuments (leaving aside simple table tombs). All of these monuments are constructed of brick covered with a thick surface of yellow stucco. The purpose of the monumental tombs in the English Cemetery was clearly to impress. A number of commentators, interpret the tombs in terms of the rivalry between the English and Dutch East India Companies at Surat.

400 year old British Cemetery is a historic place.. Unexplored place, quiet peaceful in the middle of the city... Must visit

This place is playing great role in Surat City's History. Having 70+ grave monuments. Many Sculpture are preserved but the structure is not in good condition. Well Area covered. Place in not good maintained and there is no place for parking.

Its is a very old cemetery which hasnt been maintained by the Indian Government but the architectural structures are worth a visit. Beautifully crafted. Some of the graves here are of kids and you can read the details on your graves. However the details on the bigger structures are in Latin and difficult to understand.

British Cemetery dates back to the days when Surat was an important center of business on the west coast. Many prominent British officials were cremated here who died during their service in India. The place holds a great historical importance. But unfortunately neither the Archeology Survey of India(A.S. I.) nor the local people are interested in preserving these architectural masterpiece.
