This monument just outside the Colva cemetery was commissioned in the late 60s by Mrs. Leonor de Loyola Furtado e Fernandes to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the apparition of The Blessed Virgin Mary to three children – Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco who had taken their flock of sheep to a place known as the Cova da Iria to graze, just outside the town of Fatima in Portugal.nnThe monument erected in memory of her husband Adv. Martinho António Fernandes has the statue of Our Lady of Fatima on the pedestal and the three children and a sheep at the base.nnThe text in Portuguese on the two plaques on the monument reads:nnMONUMENTO COMEMORATIVO DO CINQUENTENARIO DAS APARICOES DE NOSSA SENHORA EM FATIMA 1917 - 1967nnMonument commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady in Fatima 1917 - 1967nnandnnOFERECIDO EM MEMORIA DO ADV.
