Virupaksha Cave has been venerated since the 1300s, first because of the saint, Virupaksha Deva, then more recently due to Sri Ramana Maharshi. Sri Ramana lived in this cave for 16 years, from 1899 to 1916. It was while residing in this cave that early written works originated like ‘Self-Inquiry’ and ‘Who am I?’.nOm namoh Bhagavate Sri Ramanaya...nOm namah Sivaya...nOm Arunachala Sivaya...

Swamy Rama did Thapas , when he was young, behind RamanaAshram or Behind Agni lingam there is a path to reach the foot hill then trek first to Skandashram then Virupaksha Cave then Gugai Namashivayar cave and temple, which was allocated to him By lord Annamalaiyar itself in person, then get down to Annamalaiyar temple, no need to go reverse to Agni lingam side backwards. Better to go in bare foot, Omnamashivaya ud83dudc4dud83dude4f

This too is part of Ramana Ashram. The route is rocky and some place its steep. But once you reach there you can feel the silence. The place is good for meditation. The temple is a calm and peaceful location. If you carry food please be very careful of monkeys.
