There are 108 Shiva temples in only two places in India. Surprisingly, these two places are in East Burdwan. The first is at Nawabhat on the outskirts of Burdwan city and the second at Kalna. Both were built by the Burdwan royal family. The 108 temples of Shiva in Nawabhat are rectangular and the temples of Kalna are circular. Most notably, most of the Shivlings are black in almost all parts of the country, including Nawabhat. But only in the case of Kalna, a combination of white and black Shivlings can be seen.nAlthough popularly known as 108 Shiva Temple, the real name of this temple in Kalna is 'Navakailas Mandir'. Burdwan Raja Tejchandra built this temple in 1809. It is said that this temple was built to celebrate the transfer and ownership of royal property in Bishnupur. The structure of this temple, which is more than two hundred years old, shows the features of the famous Atchala art of Bengal.

In Hindu Mythology the number 108 is considered as very holy. Accordingly this temple premises of Lord Shiva inside the town of Bardhaman is comprised of 108 identical Shib Mandirs.nnTwo rows of small hut shaped structures, each regarded as a single shiva temple, make up this whole temple complex. These temples total 108, each having a deity of Lord Shiva within it. Legend says that Rani Bishnukumari (widow of Raja Tilakchand of Bardhaman) received divine instructions to construct such a temple in her dreams. She ordered the structures to be 108 in number, built in the similar styles of the traditional Bengali mud huts. The temple saw completion in the year 1788. Each year, on the auspicious day of Mahashibaratri, the locals celebrate the occasion with a week long fair, attracting huge crowds to this place.nnEach temple is an independent building & doesn’t have any common wall with the adjacent temple. The deity in each is a Shiva Linga which is worshipped everyday.
