Belgatchia represents the colonial Calcutta. It is also representative of Bengali aristocracy who was strong politically, religiously and advanced aesthetically with the desire to be seen as equal of the rulers. At the entrance there is huge marble bust of Alexander the Great that is perhaps symbolic of this desire. In the dimly lit magnificent corridors and huge aesthetically designed and built staircases you can feel the whispers from a past long gone.
