ufffcnnThe status of railroads in North Bihar deserves a special note. The reasons for it will become clear as you read this brief introduction.nnHistorically railroads in Bihar, as a part of the country wide network, hve been built on three gauges: the Broad Gauge (5 feet 6 inches wide), the Metre Gauge (3 feet 3 inches, a metre), and the Narrow Gauge (2 feet 6 inches.) Examples of the last were: the Ara-Sasaram Light Railway, the Futwah-Islampur Light Railway, and the Bakhtiarpur-Rajgir Light Railway. Cute little trains ran on these tracks which connected small villages to the main railheads. The latter are indicated at the beginning of each railway. As for their speed, for a sprinter it was very easy to overcome the trains. As for ordinary people, there was a lot of truth in the popular belief that one could get off the running train, answer nature's call, and reboard it by just a little brisk run! By 1987 all of Narrow Gauge had been replaced by the Broad Gauge. For many the trains on the light railways hold very sentimental memories. A picture is presented here of the Futwah-Islampur Light Railway.nnBroad gauge was the network that connected all the metropolitan areas in India, and it was on this track that superfast passenger trains, and very long and heavy goods trains, ran. All of North Bihar, however, was served only by the metre gauge. This put the people and the economy of this area at a considerable handicap. The transfer points to the broad gauge were only through steamer crossings across the Ganges at two major points, Pahleza Ghat across Patna in the west, and Barauni across Mokameh to the east. Even though Babu Jagjiwan Ram of Shahabad remained minister of railways in the Union cabinet for many years, this plight of North Bihar did not see any change. Changes began to occur when Shri Lalit Narayan Mishra became the Union Minister for Railways in Indira Gandhi's cabinet. A rail-cum-road bridge was built at Mokama in the south connecting it to the industrial complex at Barauni in the north. Coupled with this, the broad gauge was extended upto Samastipur which became a major transfer point for travel of people and transport of goods from north Bihar to the rest of the country. Incidentlly, it is also to Mishraji's credit that Madhubani paintings began to grace the coaches of major express and mail trains all over India.nA great deal of change has occurred during the tenure of Shri Ram Bilas Paswan as the Union Minister for Railways. The broad gauge has been extended throughout North Bihar. Towns and cities in the north are now connected to metropolitan areas with fast trains. Further, Hajipur, previously just a small railroad junction on the NE Rly, has been made a Regional Headquarters. Not unjustly, thanks to the zeal with which Shri Paswan has nursed his constituency, he is dubbed the Minister for Hajipur!nnPlease follow the links below for an abstract time-table (as of August 1997.)nnRaxaul - Motihari - Muzaffarpur // Samastipur// - Sonpur - Chhapra - Delhi - Amritsar - Jammu TawinnJammu Tawi - Amritsar - Delhi - Chhapra - Sonpur - //Samstipur// - Muzaffarpur - Motihari - RaxaulnnRaxaul - Siwan - Chhapra - Sonpur - Muzaffarpur - Ranchi - Tatanagar - HowrahnnRanchi - Tatanagar - Howrah - Muzaffarpur - Raxaul - Sonpur - Chhapra - SiwannnMuzaffarpur - Ahmedabad - MuzaffarpurnnChhapra - Durg - Chhapra
