Local artisans were making masks outside for the upcoming Raas. We entered a room full of masks, then Dr. Hemchandra Goswami sir invited us in and we sat down. He explained to us how masks are made, what are they used for and history of Majuli. It was nice to meet him, he was very humble and explained each of our questions with patience. Some masks are worn during performance, bigger ones are for wall hanging as decoration pieces and some smaller ones are used as souvenirs. Mask making is an art and educational, cultural and financial values are associated with it. It can be improved a great deal and made into a fine museum one day.
