Thana is the gateway to south Kannur otherwise known as Chovva. Chovva village has an upper part called 'Melechovva' and a lower side called 'Thazhechovva'. The upper Chovva has a majestic temple complex called Maha Shiva Kshethram. The lower side has a Juma Masjidh of ancient origin. There are a few car showrooms on both sides. The newly built office of Mathrubhumi newspaper comes on the lower side. Thazhechovva also has a small railway station but only slow trains stop here. The traffic in this region is hectic and noise levels are unbearable. The western side of Chovva is less peaceful with many cute beaches like Adikadalayi and Thayyil . There are huts given for rent for foreign travellers.
