Roman Catholic church good place for prayernThere was an interesting story behind this chruch that in the year 1943 a Ship named Villiam B. Augustus, was thrown to a sand island due to heavy cyclone. Though they tried hard to rescue the ship consisting of 1000 tonnes by using all manpower, it was in-vain. The ship stayed for one year in the same place without an inch of moment. At that time, one engineer by name E.H.Swini was deputed from America for this purpose. He also tried and came to a conclusion that this task would not be possible with manpower. And he worshiped the Lord ‘ Mary Maa’ and all of sudden the ship moved from the sand island. In tribute of the Lord Mary Maa, the engineer and his wife constructed this church in yanam. This festivals can also be seen now in the hill temple behind this church.

St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Yanam was built by the Catholic French rulers in the year 1846, with the foundation stone being laid by Father Michel Lecnam. He, however, did not live to see the church built and a culvert has been installed in his memory in the Church. Most of the furniture and other decorations were imported from France. Close to the church are two hill temples, one built by the French rulers of Yanam and the other built by the English engineers. The temple is an important place of worship in Yanam and a place that should be visited once at Yanam. It is an excellent example of French architecture of that time period.

Oldest church, built in 1943nnThere is a interesting story behind construction of this church, once a 1000 tonne ship named William B Augustus was run aground on a sand island near Yanam due to a cyclone, The ship owners tried to salvage the Ship for an Year but in Vain, so they deputed an American engineer E. H Swain, he also tried hard using all man power but in vain, so he prayed to goddess Mary and all of a sudden the ship got moved from the island and got salvaged, In tribute of goddess Mary this church was built by engineer Swain and his wife
