My advice would be to not visit alone. Varanasi is a pretty impersonal place. It didn't want to stay more than two days. Although Varanasi is an old site the buildings are not - the majority are not more than a couple of hundred years old.nBut the main reason Varanasi is less than ideal is: cleanliness. I was sick in an instant here. The first meal I think and yet I had never been ill in India after 3 previous visits of a combined total of five months. Varanasi is hot and there is no relief from the city. I ran away to Sarnath only ten kilometres away. What a welcome contrast that was, staying in a Tibetan monastery. Varanasi with a partner; it would probably be a different story.
