The Calico Museum of Textiles

The Calico Museum of Textiles is located in the city of Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat in western India.The museum is managed by the Sarabhai Foundation.nnThe museum was founded in 1949 by the industrialist Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gira Sarabhai. Ahmedabad at that time had a flourishing textile industry. The museum was originally housed at the Calico Mills in the heart of the textile industry. But as the collection grew the museum was shifted to the Sarabhai House in Shahibaug in 1983.

A must visit. The best private museum I have ever been to, showcasing Indian handloom craft, fabric, weaves, embroidery. Actually in a way we should be thankful to them for preserving it for humanity. The experience is beyond words.

This place is one of the most wonderful spots in all of India. Everything from the building, grounds and the content has been carefully considered. The only negative is that you are not permitted to take pictures. We where told that we could purchase books about the museum at the end of the tour but none of the books they have in the store truly take the buildings and grounds into consideration.

The best!! The collection is awesome and the guide is an expert on textiles. She explains well but the problem is that we didn't have a lot of time to look at the beauty. The site is also very good. Super!!!

Had one of the most Amazing experiences today at the Calico museum. Was absolutely impressed with the exhibits of art, textiles and embroidery. This is by far the best museum I have seen.nA special mention to Kamalini for her passion for the ancient craftsmanship and her presentation skills.nLoved the entire experience.
