Oldest synagogue well maintained

Must visit place if you are a person who loves to travel back in time. Photography inside is prohibited. Phones are allowed but should be switched off. Entry is restricted through ticket.

A must visit place for history enthusiasts. The oldest and only active synagogue in the commonwealth nations. The place is in Mattanchery. You can reach this place by ferry from Ernakulam boat jetty (the cheapest and most convinient way available). You can reach by road also from kochi, by public transport also. If you are coming by a ferry you arrive in Fort kochi terminal. To reach the synagogue you might have to take a taxi or auto rickshaw and reach jew street.nThe synagogue is open from Sunday to Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm and 3 pm to 6 pm. On Fridays it will be closed after 2pm. Saturday is a holiday. Photography and video inside the synagogue is prohibited. Inside it is very calm and quiet and you can see architecture as it was centuries back. Almost like traveling back in time. Everything is well preserved and beautiful. There is also a board that says 'dress modestly' ( I was dressed in jeans and t shirt, didn't have any problem.Most of the people were dressed casually) There are many 'art cafes' on the way that leads to the synagogue, where the food items are extremely over priced. If you are just interested in eating some practical food, don't go into one of these places. There are many good, cheaper options available nearby. There are also many different varieties of antiques on display. If you don't know to checkout the authenticity of these items, please be careful while buying (at your own risk).
