The State of Jharkhand came into being on the 15th of November, 2000, but many of the regions that constitute Jharkhand had been afflicted by the scourge of extremism since much before that. The terrain of Jharkhand is predominantly hilly, forested, and dissected by several rivers and water courses. Many of the areas are relatively inaccessible, or difficult to access, by road or rail. Before the formation of Jharkhand, the areas under it had suffered an imbalance in regional development. The social and economic conditions otherwise were also conducive to perceived grievances. The combination of these conditions was a fertile medium for extremism to flourish. At present large parts of Jharkhand are seriously afflicted by extremism.nnTaking pro-active initiative, the Government of Jharkhand through Home Dept. Notification No. 8C-203/07-748/Ranchi dated 19 Feb. 2008 sanctioned the creation of 20 Assault Groups of Special Task Force (STF) for eradication of extremist activities in Jharkhand. This force was later given the distinctive name of “Jharkhand Jaguar” (JJ), and also a distinctive uniform. Acknowledging the utility of JJ, subsequently the Govt. of Jharkhand again through Home Department Notification No. 8/C-202/09-1194/Ranchi dated 22.10.2009 sanctioned the creation of 20 Assault Groups in JJ, of which 2 have been raised so far. Thus the sanctioned number of Assault Groups (AGs) in JJ is 40, of which 22 are functional at present. Three more AGs are likely to be created shortly.nn3. Achievements :-nn3(A). Achievements of JJ Assault Groups in Fin. Yr. 2011-2012nnEncounter took place near village-Choukhara, p.s.-Manatu, Distt.-Palamau and cartridges, rounds were recovered on 21-04-11.nnOne Maoist Vijay Bhumij was arrested from Village-Hallumani P.S-Patamda, Dist- East Singhbhum on 20-04-11.nnArms and explosive items were recovered and two Maoists arrested from Vill-Harli, P.S- Churchu, Distt- Hazaribagh on 18-05-11.nnA mini gun factory was unearthed in Masuriya jungle p.s.-Kuru, Distt.-Lohardaga and an accused Budhu Lohra was arrested on 21-05-11.nnDurung Ops. Parakram in Latehar Dist. Maoist Bunker and Camp were destroyed and heavy amount of arms and explosive items were recovered from Gotang jungle, p.s.-Garu, Distt.-Latehar on 05-07-11.nnMaoist Camp was destroyed, and arms and Maoist literatures were recovered from vill.-Bakitola, P.S. Chandwa, Distt. Latehar on 10-07-11.nnThree Maoists were arrested and explosive items recovered from Vill- Gitilbera, P.S-Arki, Distt-Khunti on 24-07-11.nnAn encounter took place and Maoist Camps were destroyed in Piri jungle P.S- Garu, Latehar on 01-08-11.
