We were heading to harbour beach and encountered this light house on the way. We were expecting elevator in that but it only had stairs.nThe view of the staircase from bottom is magnificent. I have added the pics of the staircase.nThe view of the beach and the city from the top is breathtaking. This place is worth a visit. The fresh air on top of the lighthouse is very relaxing.

In nineteenth century, the only light to guide ships coming to Pondicherry was atop the Red Hills which was inadequate. The project was finally taken up during the tenure of Governor Saint Simon in 1835. Louis Guerre was the engineer of the project. The foundation stone for the lighthouse was laid at the end of 1835 and the inauguration ceremony took place in February 1836.[3]nnThe height of the lighthouse is 29 meters. It has a round tower and a square base. The cost of construction was 10,000 francs. The foundation has a depth of nine meters. Its light beam could be seen from a distance of 15 miles. The light source consisted of six oil lamps and two reflectors. The light source was converted to electric lamps in 1913. The power of the lamp was increased in 1931.[3] The new lamp had a range of 26 nautical miles. It took 36 seconds for one full rotation of the beam

Pondicherry light house is situated bit aside the village .if someone wish to see the light house u should pass through the local fisherman's village.nIf you are a going as a solo woman, be careful about your safety because local boys will be roaming in and around the light house with alcohol mostly..nTake a entry ticket and you can climb upstairs to have a wonderful/fabulous view from the top ..nBut always local boys will be there in a group with alcohol and playing cards ..nSo if ur going as a single female, please don't spend much time there .nOr better go along with some family members or friends so that u can enjoy well ..nOr else , go along with other visitors together..nnIt would be better if government strictly not allows the local men's group to stay there with alcohol and some local college boys also be in group and making comments on females and some atrocities..
