Established as the Desert Afforestation Station in 1952 at Jodhpur. This was later expanded into Desert Afforestation and Soil Conservation Station in 1957, and finally upgraded to Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI) in 1959 under Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi. The CAZRI operates through Six Divisions, located at the headquarters in Jodhpur. There are five Regional Research Stations located in different agro-climatic zones to work on location-specific problems.

The Central Arid Zone Research Institute was established by the Government of India in 1952 in Jodhpur, a city in the state ofRajasthan. It was previously known as Desert Afforestation Research Station until it was renamed in 1959.nnThe objectives of the Institute are to find ways to stabilising shifting sand dunes, establishing silvopastoral and firewood plantations, planting windbreaks to reduce wind speed and subsequent erosion, rehabilitatingdegraded forests and starting afforestation of barren hill slopes.nnIt has a small pictorial museum with a photographic exhibition illustrating the institute's work.
