A few years ago, one of my brothers and I were travelling from Guwahati to Silchar. We boarded the Ledo Intercity Express at Guwahati Railway Station at 8 pm and around 11 pm the train reached Lumding Junction, where we got off. The now defunct Barak Valley Express was scheduled to leave for Silchar at 4 am from Platform No. 1, which was dark and somewhat detached from the other platforms. It was also the platform where the metre gauge line to Silchar originated. Both of us sat on a bench and had our food. The station was not crowded, and was silent and peaceful. At 3 am, we took tea at a shop in the station. Then we boarded the Barak Valley Express. For the first 2-3 hours the train moved at a greater speed but throughout the hilly terrain, it ran at a much lower speed, probably at about 40 km/hr. A few months later, the Barak Valley Express was withdrawn from service, and the metre gauge line was converted to broad gauge line.
